The Problem

Kazoo, a dynamic Pet toy distribution company, has recently expanded its operations and moved into a new warehouse facility. The warehouse dimensions span approximately 160m x 60m, providing ample space for storage and logistics. However, with growth comes the need for robust wireless coverage to support warehouse operations efficiently.

The Challenge

Kazoo sought to establish reliable wireless connectivity within the new warehouse to facilitate seamless communication and data access across the facility. Key challenges included potential limitations in cable lengths between Intermediate Distribution Frames (IDFs) and the Main Distribution Frame (MDF), as well as obstacles to wireless coverage posed by shelves filled with stock.

The Solution

To address these challenges, we proposed a comprehensive solution tailored to Kazoo's specific requirements:

  1. Fiber Optic Installation: Multi-mode fiber optic cables were installed between the IDFs and MDF to ensure reliable connectivity without concerns about exceeding maximum cable lengths. This solution minimizes signal degradation over long distances and provides a stable backbone for the network infrastructure.

  2. Optimized IDF Layout: With the warehouse divided into four sections, we strategically positioned IDFs to minimize cable runs, ensuring that Cat6 cable lengths remained within the recommended limits. This approach enhances efficiency and reduces the risk of signal loss or interference.

  3. Wireless Access Point Deployment: The current wireless setup, comprising four access points positioned at each corner of the warehouse, was augmented to include nine access points distributed strategically throughout the facility. This expanded coverage ensures consistent signal strength and connectivity across the warehouse floor.

  4. Flexibility for Future Expansion: Additional provisions were made to accommodate future growth and scalability. By incorporating the flexibility to add more access points if required, Kazoo can adapt to evolving needs without disrupting existing operations.

Assessment of Potential Issues:

  • Alternative Technology: We explored alternative technologies to Cat6 cables for connections between IDFs and the MDF, ultimately opting for fiber optic cables to mitigate potential issues.

  • Layout Optimization: Careful planning of IDF layouts and cable routing helped minimize cable lengths and avoid exceeding maximum distances.

  • Wireless Coverage: By assessing the current wireless setup and considering the challenges posed by shelves filled with stock, we devised a solution that optimizes signal strength and coverage across the warehouse floor.

By implementing a comprehensive solution tailored to Kazoo's needs, we successfully addressed the challenges of establishing wireless coverage in the new warehouse. The integration of fiber optic cables, strategic IDF layouts, and expanded access point deployment ensures reliable connectivity and supports seamless warehouse operations. With a focus on scalability and flexibility, Kazoo is well-positioned to meet future demands and maintain optimal efficiency in its distribution processes.
